As I sit in our shared living room, writing this blog post on our free day in La Jarilla, I can feel the vibrant atmosphere around me. Some people are soaking up the sun, while others are chatting outside. Linda and Toño are singing and making gazpacho in kitchen. It’s these simple moments that truly fill the heart.
The first week here has flown by, and for many of us, including myself, this is our first experience with volunteering. We came with uncertain expectations, but those of us who have participated in projects before understand now—it’s so much more than just lending a hand. Volunteering here is a reciprocal exchange; you give, and you receive, much like the balance we observe in nature—a lesson we’ve already begun to learn.
Here’s what you can expect when you arrive:
Warm Welcome: You’ll be greeted with smiles and picked up to journey to La Jarilla, where you’ll find your own space. Chances are, you’ll have a wonderful roommate.
Orientation: On your first day, you’ll learn about the agenda and how to coexist harmoniously with everyone during your stay.
Shared Responsibilities: Be prepared to contribute! We’ll all cook, clean, and share meals together, ensuring we create memorable experiences.
Cultural Insights: You’ll delve into the Spanish culture and, of course, the principles of permaculture. It’s important to realize that permaculture extends beyond agriculture; it embodies a way of living. As with everything in life, it begins with you.
Learning and Practice: You’ll gain valuable knowledge and have the opportunity to practice what you learn.
Some reflections from Week 1 that us, volunteers, would like to share:
Embrace Learning: Always strive to learn—both independently and from those around you.
Value Sharing: Share generously with others. You don’t need much; the fulfillment that comes from helping without expecting anything in return is truly rewarding.
Build on What Exists: There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Nature and existing resources provide valuable guidance for moving forward.
Savor Every Moment: Enjoy each minute; every experience contributes to your journey.
